Learn — Understanding Neurodivergence

Learn how your brain works

Neurodivergence is not a deficit. It is a different operating system. Understanding how your brain works is the first step to building systems that work WITH it.

Understanding ADHD

ADHD is not just about attention. It is about executive function. ADHD brains have differences in dopamine processing, working memory, and task initiation.

  • Time blindness: 5 minutes and 45 minutes can feel identical.
  • Task paralysis: Starting a task can require more activation energy.
  • Hyperfocus: ADHD brains can focus intensely when engaged.
  • Dopamine differences: Motivation works differently.

Understanding Autism

Autism is a neurotype that affects how a person processes sensory information, communicates, and interacts with the world. Autistic brains often have strong pattern recognition, deep focus on special interests, and a need for predictability.

  • Sensory processing: Sensory input may be experienced more intensely.
  • Monotropism: Deep focus on one thing, making task-switching difficult.
  • Routine and predictability: Unexpected changes can be genuinely distressing.
  • Social communication: Different, not deficient. Masking is exhausting.

Understanding AuDHD

AuDHD is the experience of being both autistic and ADHD. It is not two conditions added together. It is its own neurotype with conflicting needs: the ADHD drive for novelty vs. the autistic need for routine.

Understanding Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a neurotype that affects how the brain processes written language. It is not a reading deficit. Dyslexic brains often have strong visual-spatial thinking, pattern recognition, and big-picture reasoning.

  • Visual thinking: Dyslexic brains process information better through images and diagrams.
  • Strengths: Creative problem-solving, 3D thinking, seeing connections others miss.
  • Planning challenges: Text-heavy planners can be overwhelming. Visual, color-coded tools work better.

Understanding Dyspraxia

Dyspraxia affects motor coordination, planning, and sequencing. Dyspraxic brains may struggle with fine motor tasks, spatial awareness, and the physical execution of planned actions.

Cross-Cutting Topics

Some experiences are shared across neurodivergent types. These topics affect ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and many others.

  • Executive Function: Working memory, task initiation, planning, emotional regulation.
  • Sensory Processing: How the brain handles sensory input. Overload and sensory seeking are common across neurotypes.
  • Neurodivergent Burnout: The exhaustion from masking, compensating, and operating in a neurotypical world.
  • Masking and Unmasking: Hiding neurodivergent traits to fit in. It is exhausting and contributes to burnout.
  • Overwhelm: When everything is too much. The first step is always: get it out of your head.
